Letters from Clients

When we first began to investigate property down south we were surprised at the value (price versus quality of property) we were able to get in the Bahamas in general. As Canadians we felt comfortable with the Bahamas because it was part of the British Commonwealth, used a similar language and shared many of the same values. It had a stable government, a developing economy, a good education system and was easily reachable by plane from Toronto at a reasonable price.

Within the past twelve months we had visited Florida, St. Thomas, St. Maartan and Puerto Rico, vacationed in Muskoka and bought property in Blue Mountain. Once we realized the value available in the Bahamas it became a matter of determining which of the many islands appealed to us. We wanted a laid back, easy going lifestyle and a safe place where we didn't have to worry about personal safety or vandalism when we were away. While we didn't want a hectic lifestyle we also didn't want to be totally isolated either.

We researched all the islands and after a great deal of investigation identified LI as being out of the way but still having normal services, it was regarded as being very safe, had an economy dependent on farming and fishing instead of tourism and had a reputation for being hard working. There were many comments on the internet about LI and every one was positive. That was not the same for all the islands. These were the reasons we were attracted to LI(Long Island) but were not the only reasons we eventually purchased land on the island. Here is what we found on visiting the island: Incredible people who readily embraced us as if we had lived on the island all our life. Magnificent beaches on both sides of the island completely deserted. In ten days, nine beaches, and only once did we have to "share" a beach.

The vegetation on the island was so lush and tropical that it was easy to fall in love with it immediately. The flowers were incredible. The island was a throwback fifty years. Can you imagine your rental car being left at the airport with the keys in it. We drove it for ten days and never signed a contract. That kind of trust is not found anywhere else we have traveled in the world.

The day my wife and I returned home we sat on our back deck in one of the most beautiful areas of Ontario. Our backyard is beautiful. We both were so depressed. We had tears in our eyes. We wanted so badly to return we began to search for flights and a time we could return. We scheduled a trip a month later. The day we were to land Hurricane Irene hit the island. We were so upset. We rebooked for five days later. When our plane landed the island had gone from lush tropical to ugly brown. We looked at each other and said do you still like it? No power on the island, limited cell phones, roads washed out, power lines down, limited food supplies AND by the time we left four days later we had bought a piece of land and couldn't wait to build. Long Island, Bahamas is paradise. No question.

Deciding that you want to move to the Bahamas is very exciting….but how do you decide which island would be best, and what would it really be like to live there? Eight years ago my husband and I faced this dilemma. We started researching everything we could on the internet to get information on many islands. We narrowed it down to three islands, Great Exuma, Eleuthra and Long Island. We were hoping to find an island that had good surfing as my husband has been a surfer since he was a teenager.  We were thrilled to find out that our agent on Long Island; Charlie Beede is also a long time surfer!

I have spent a lot of time in the Bahamas having once worked on charter yachts, my husband had never been, but I knew he would love it because of his love of the ocean and surfing. So we planned our trip, ready to buy something!  We had a fabulous time and enjoyed Great Exuma and Eleuthra…but there is something magical about Long Island, you feel it almost immediately.

Meeting Charlie and his wife Joyce was so much fun; they are the kind of people you feel you’ve known all your life. We were there for Christmas and New Year’s Eve and ending up spending New Year’s Eve with them at Stella Maris, a memorable evening! Long Island has everything, from hill top property to ocean front. If you want ocean front, do you want the Caribbean side with calm waters and beautiful sunsets or do you want the dramatic waves of the Atlantic side and watch the cruise ships off in the distance? Charlie was great in showing us all over the island and helping us get to know what Long Island would be like if we lived here.  As we drove around, Charlie pointed out the friendly tradition of waving at each other, and if you don’t wave they may think you are mad at them!  Then he showed us how you can just raise your index finger off the steering wheel and that counts as a wave!!  Where we were from in California, if a driver raises a finger at you, it is not friendly!!

We did not have a hard time picking out our property; we chose 2 acres on the Atlantic side.  My husband is able to surf right in front of our house.  The hardest part was waiting until we were ready to retire seven years later.  Our house is finally finished and we moved in September 2009.  Yesterday I ran into Charlie at the market and he asked me how we liked our new life and I said, “That is exactly what it is a new life and we couldn’t be happier and we will always be grateful to you Charlie for helping us find our paradise!

 Living happily ever after,

J. N. - "The surfers Wife"

In 2004 we began our search for the perfect retirement paradise. After surfing the internet we came across Bahamasbestrealestate.com and began communicating with Charlie Beede. Following several communications via emails and phone calls he convinced us to visit Long Island to see for ourselves the beauty of this island. We visited during a winter break from the grind of our jobs with our son Riley. Charlie greeted us at the airport and made sure we were settled into our accommodations for the night. The next day, Charlie picked us up and our tour of Long Island began.

We toured the island by car visiting various available properties including homes and vacant land, giving us all the options Long Island had to offer. In addition, Charlie showed us the island and a few of his favoriate spots via his own boat. We snorkeled, explored caves, and met some very special people along the way. After a couple days of touring the Island with Charlie, our family returned to two lots that especially caught our attention. We quickly settled on the perfect spot after visiting the location during the evening sunset.

The location we selected is on Sunset Beach in Whymms. We moved out soon after with the purchase. Along the way Charlie was there to guide us and he made it very easy to work through the process until our island paradise was ours. He shared our excitement during the entire process. Over the years we have traveled to Long Island as often as we could to further explore the island and create some special family memories. Last year, I retired after 32 years and began planning our next home site on Long Island. We broke ground in April and will soon have our island dream house to spend the rest of our lives living, exploring and relaxing on Long Island.

Long Island has so much to offer, from the crashing waves and majestic cliffs on the North Atlantic side to the calming shores and picturesque sunsets on the Caribbean Sea. The relaxing laid back life style, the beautiful friendly Bahamian people, many new friends and memories are waiting for you. Please do not wait too long. This Island is absolutely beautiful and a very special place that has so much to offer.

Contact Charlie Beede right away to answer your questions, plan your visit, and find your own perfect paradise just as we did!

We met with real estate agents representing some of the most beautiful island properties in the world, but none made an impression on us quite like Charlie Beede of Long Island, Bahamas.

We arrived on Long Island for the first time in May 2006. We sailed our Bayfield 32C, Puff, into the Clarence Town Harbour on the South end of the island and knew right away that we were somewhere special. Fresh from the islands of the Eastern Caribbean where beauty abounds and a different paradise awaits at every new anchorage, Long Island already stood out as unique.

It's gin clear waters were teaming with fish. You couldn't take a step on the gold, pink, and white sand beaches without noticing another pastel and perfect seashell, each one even more lovely than the last. The beaming sunshine was complimented by cool trade winds blowing steadily and softly through the ports. And the amazing turquoise sea was the most delectable temperature for a long, lazy swim.

We knew we had to find a Bahamas real estate agent who would show us around this astounding place! We made our way to shore and began to walk down the main road looking for a real estate office and just checking the place out. It was a Sunday, so there weren't many places open. Soon enough though, a man in a truck stopped and asked if we needed a lift. We told him we were looking for someone who could tell us about property for sale on the island and he said he would take us where we needed to go. It turned out the man was from Oregon and he owned a home on Long Island, Bahamas, where he spent part of the year.

He took us to Bahamas Best Real Estate in the settlement of Salt Pond. Bahamas Best Real Estate is owned and run by Charlie and Joyce Beede. Their office is in their home and we were dropped off in the driveway. The nice man who gave us a ride simply honked to notify them that we were there and drove away. Out of the house came a beautiful woman with long, dark hair wearing brightly colored sarong. She greeted us warmly and introduces herself as Joyce Beede. We told her our story and she invited us inside to wait for her husband Charlie to come home.

The house was surrounded by a lush garden and had views of a gorgeous bay. Joyce actually fixed us lunch while we all chatted and got to know each other better. How's that for hospitality? Suddenly, Brian's eyes focused on something that he looked very excited about. It was a framed photograph on the wall of a man holding a surfboard on the beach. "Is Charlie a surfer?" he asked Joyce. Of course her answer was yes, and the next question was naturally whether or not there were waves on Long Island, to which the answer was also... yes. Thus, one of our more elusive criteria was filled.

The famous Charlie Beede arrived shortly after we discovered his illustrious history of surfing the North shore of Hawaii. He was thrilled to show us around the island... even on a Sunday. I thought it a bit odd when he grabbed loads of snorkeling gear and threw them in his truck before we set off to see the available property listings. We will never forget that day. Charlie showed us all of the best Long Island had to offer. In between viewing beautiful island land and homes, we snorkeled Dean's Blue Hole, ate fresh conch salad at Max's Conch Bar, and stopped for cold Kalik's at a roadside package store. We had the best time of our whole, entire Caribbean vacation on Long Island with Charlie and Joyce!

That evening, Charlie and Joyce let us borrow their car to drive back to our anchorage. We agreed they were the friendliest and most fun people we'd met on our whole trip! We wanted them to be our neighbors. The following day, we met more Long Island residents. There were native Bahamians, Americans, and Europeans. Some were full time residents and some were part time. All of them were wonderful and welcoming! It didn't take long before we knew we wanted Long Island to be our home, too. We signed on the dotted line before we sailed away and have never regretted it.

My first contact with Charles Beede was on the internet.  I knew that once we arrived on Long Island, there would be an immediate connection.  Charlie is not your ordinary real estate broker.  He is more than that.  He will go over and above to make your visit to beautiful Long Island, pleasurable, informative, and with a great sense of welcoming.  Charles Beede truly loves Long Island.  When Charles shows you this beautiful piece of paradise, he does not only show you property, but shows you what Long Island is really all about.

We purchased property on Line Bay, and now have our beautiful home completed overlooking the beautiful waters of Salt Pond Harbor.  We have made many friends on the island, thanks to Charles and his most warm, and loving wife Joyce.

I trust once you venture to Long Island, meet Charles and his wife, you will never want to leave.

Long Island truly is a special place on this earth.

I want to share my excitement about my recent experience buying land on Long Island, Bahamas.  I have been visiting Nassau and Paradise Island every winter since 1989, and never ventured to the out islands.  This past January during my routine visit to Paradise Island, I came upon an advertisement in the yellow pages for a real estate agency on Long Island and I felt compelled to give them a call.  It was time to see what the "other" side of the Bahamas was like.

My husband and I sold our home in New York, and for the past 3 years we have been going to Hawaii looking at real estate to create our "dream tropical life".  During this visit to Paradise Island, I thought I should take a look at some real estate in the Bahamas too.  It is soo close.   Much closer than Hawaii.  And beautiful.

So, I called Charlie and he took his time and explained the Island to me.  He was so open and direct and honest that I bought a ticket that afternoon to fly over to Long Island to see what real estate he had to offer.   He described the Island and the properties he had for sale so accurately.  Long Island is a jewel.  One of those amazing places filled with untouched beaches that the rest of the world hasn't discovered yet.  I remember Charlie saying to me on the phone, "if you are looking for 18 holes of golf, and fine shops, you don't want to come to Long Island".   Right away, I knew this was a place I HAD to see.

The next day I arrived at Deadman's Cay airport and Charlie met me there.  He drove me around the Island and was filled with wonderful stories of life there and little points of interest.  What a wonderful tour and a wonderful day with a very special man.  I instantly felt comfortable with him.   Charlie tells it like it is .  He and his terrific wife, Joyce, have been living on Long Island for over 10 years and they know it like their own backyard.

I stayed the night on Long Island, had an amazing meal, and the following day was treated to an incredible ride on Charlie's boat to view the properties I had looked at by sea. That was it for me.  That day I made an offer on the land and today I am happy to say, we are proud owners of some awesome waterfront property on Long Island, Bahamas.

If it was not for Charlie and his straight forward, direct, no bull attitude, I would not be an owner today.  I have never worked with anyone in real estate that was so honest and informative.  What I also realize, is that when you buy real estate on an island like Long Island, the relationship you have with your broker is so important because he is also the source of so much information.  Where to go to get the best vegetables, fish, supplies, contractors, architects, water, etc. I don't want the world to discover Long Island just yet, but I can't help but spread the word about the amazing man, Charlie Beede and his wife Joyce who are running a fine business with all the care and honesty anyone could imagine.

  Thanks Charlie,

If you are thinking about buying some property in the Bahamas I have some
advice for you: DON'T PUT IT OFF MUCH LONGER OR YOU WON'T BE
ABLE TO AFFORD IT!

I know, because my wife and I bought 14 acres of property on Long Island in August of 2001. It has almost 400 feet of the prettiest beach on the island with clear blue water and unbelievable sunsets. And if we had waited until today to buy it we would NOT have been able to afford it.

But we were lucky. We had two things going for us that enabled us to make a quick decision on the property we bought on Long Island:

#1. We had always wanted to live on the beach so we had done two years of research on the price of beachfront property in Florida from the Panhandle to the Keys. From our research of the market, we knew that a 100 foot lot on the beach would cost at LEAST 2 MILLION BUCKS! (It's more now!). So we knew
that the property values on Long Island were a bargain compared to Florida and the Northern Bahamas.

#2. We were working with Charlie Beede. If you want to find someone to let you in on all the inside information about the Bahamas and Long Island, he's the guy. He is a no-nonsense man who know his business and Long island.

We met Charlie and in two days he had shown us the entire island and ALL the properties for sale. He also explained the procedures on buying property in the Bahamas. Before meeting Charlie I was skeptical about buying property in the Bahamas. Charlie explained everything that was involved, how it all worked and ways to streamline the process. Needless to say he totally put us at ease about purchasing land in the Bahamas. In a nutshell, buying property in the Bahamas is pretty much like buying it in the States.

Charlie told us about the real estate market in the Bahamas and encouraged us to buy before the prices went up. We did and they have! We are really glad we listened to his advice. We are happy with the land we purchased and are currently in the process of putting up a very nice house. Hopefully we'll be down there full time in a few months. Can't wait!!

We think Long Island is the best island in the Bahamas. The people are fantastic. Warm and friendly. The island offers much to do and see. It's 80 miles long and there's only 5000 people on it! If you are looking for some seclusion and serenity, this is it. Long Island is THE tropical paradise that you have been dreaming about all these years.  Call Charlie now and grab a piece of beachfront or a hilltop lot and get down here and start living the dream. Life, my friends, is too short!
