Bahamas Real Estate

Long Island is one of the most unique islands in the Bahamas. For many people, it is considered the hidden Bahamas. On the northern tip there are dramatic sea cliffs overlooking the dark blue water where Columbus anchored the Santa Maria when he discovered the island in 1492. In his ship’s log, an entry mentions taking on fresh water, trading with the natives, and notes that this was the most beautiful island he had ever seen. The beaches are incredible.  Talcum-powder fine white sand and crushed pink and brown shell cover some of the most stunning beaches in the Bahamas. The water is clear, warm, and turquoise blue. From hillside perches, where cool trade winds blow, you can look down to stretches of spectacular coast and water so pristine you can see multiple shades of blue in the depths of the ocean. Yet this island has much more to offer than its natural beauty; it is safe, easily accessible by air, close to the United States, and home to friendly English-speaking locals.

The ocean in this part of the Bahamas is teaming with life, making it a dream location for fishermen and divers. Local fishermen dive for spiny lobster and freshphoto 2x.jpg (5162 bytes) fish, and a stop at one of the small restaurants along the road will be a real treat. The food is excellent and the island people welcome you with open arms. If you’re looking for an island retreat where you can come and relax on the beach, and escape the crowds…this is the place.

On Long Island there are two very different coasts, one with soft white beaches and the other with rocky headlands that descend suddenly into the ocean. The terrain varies from sloping hills in the north to low hillsides, with numerous limestone caves, fading into flatlands in the south.  Long Island stretches over 75 miles, with many small settlements along Queen’s Highway. The scenery from the highway changes from old buildings surrounded by stone walls, to beautiful beaches with calm blue water. You will also see farms growing bananas, corn, avocadoes, mangos, and many other fruits and vegetables. The Island’s economy is supported by tourism, fishing, farming, and construction.  There is no unemployment on the island, as anyone who wants a job can find one.

cavex.jpg (6651 bytes)Annually, the biggest event is the Long Island sailing regatta, featuring Bahamian made sailboats, crewed by sailors from all over the country. This is a very exciting time to be on island.   One may sample the local food being served, listen to live Bahamian folk music, and witness the exciting sailboat races just offshore. The feeling is one of days gone by where people lived off of the land and sea. This is an Island that has retained its old world charm.

Long Island is located 165 miles southeast of Nassau, Bahamas. Daily flights are available.  Flight time is approximately 45 minutes.

There are many exciting activities available, such as excellent snorkeling and scuba diving, along with surfing, exploring caves, and deep sea fishing for Tuna,SACRED CAVE.jpg (6382 bytes) Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, Mackerel, or deep drop fishing for Red Snapper, and Grouper. Tours are available by car, boat, or plane. However, in order to explore the remote inland waterways, kayaking is the best mode of transportation. Bone fishing guides are available for half day or all day adventures. One can spend the day on a remote beach with complete privacy, or tour the island and shop for pottery, woven goods, or fresh fruit. Go to lunch at an authentic island conch bar serving fresh fish, conch, and lobster  Take the time to meet the locals, becoming one with the island.
